What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation (PE) is when a man reaches orgasm sooner than he or his partner would like during sex. Ejaculation is the release of semen from the men’s penile urethra. When present, it can be a cause for frustration and anxiety as it may make sex less enjoyable and can potentially impact relationships.

How common is PE?

Premature ejaculation is likely the most common sexual dysfunction in men.  Studies in the United States show that up to 1 in 3 men with ages between 18 and 59 years old have problems with PE.  PE can happen at any age.

Causes of Premature Ejaculation

There is no clear cause for the development of premature ejaculation. Historically, PE was considered to be psychological.  Mental health issues involved in PE include but are not limited to:

  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Guilt
  • Unrealistic expectations about sexual performance
  • Performance anxiety

Sometimes, premature ejaculation can happen as a result of erectile dysfunction.   When a man worries that they can lose their erection while having sex, he might develop a pattern of rushing to ejaculate.  In these cases, treating the erectile dysfunction can help the PE go away.

Common Treatments for Premature Ejaculation

Psychological Therapy

This may help to address the negative feelings and emotions that lead to problems with sexual relationships.  The goal of this treatment is to find the source of the problem and find solutions that may help resolve PE.

Behavioral Therapy

Using exercises to help build tolerance to delay the ejaculation.

Medical therapy

Although no drugs have been approved to treat PE in the United States, there are some oral medications and numbing creams or sprays that have been shown to delay ejaculation in men with Premature Ejaculation.

When should I see a doctor?

If you are experiencing premature ejaculation and feel like it is affecting your sexual health and/or your relationship, you should see a specialist who can help you.
